We fear so much.
We talk to ourselves about what can go wrong and create solutions in our minds.
Of problems which are not there yet.
Useful, sometimes. It is useful to think about saving some money, to pay the taxes, or buy a new fridge if the old one breaks down. Nothing to be afraid of though, if you take care of it.
And yet we fear.
We fear lack of money.
We fear that other people dislike us.
We fear to lose what we have.
We fear failure.
We fear to lose the people we love.
We fear illness.
We fear death.
We experience most of our fears before the actual event. And many of the imagined events will not happen at all!
All this fear for nothing…
Sometimes I wish I could be more like an animal.
Especially dogs seem to master this ‘I am in the now’ state.
My sister’s dog likes to jump, even when he is under a table. Really.
It’s a big dog, so you can imagine what happens.
He hits his head so hard, it would make us scream for a minute and complain for week.
Not this dog.
A few seconds later, if it takes that long, he is as happy as ever. Wagging his tail in positive expectation.
Even if the next big event that day is waiting a long, long time until finally, he is taken for a walk. He does not seem to know, or at least he does not seem to be bothered by it. He might still feel the pain from hitting the table. Accepting what is. Not regretting what happened, not afraid of what will happen. When he can take a leak. When he can have some fun running around. Which scary people, dogs, or terror cats he will encounter.
That’s what we do, be afraid of what will happen, or what we will miss out on.
So why is being fearful a good thing?
How can fear be a great guide for you?
Well, most of the time fear is not good thing. It is FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real. It’s a major mindfuck. And you should get rid of it.
If something bad happens, like hitting your head, that is the right moment to feel the pain. And even then you should only pay attention if action makes sense. Light pain: ignore and move on with something else. Bleeding like crazy: let’s do some first aid and make sure to get professional medical care.
And there are fears which actually do provide guidance…
Yes, now it gets really interesting.
Maybe you have been dreaming about starting your own company. Or writing a book, making a very special painting, sell your house and become a digital nomad, emigrate to the country of your dreams, make a career switch, start a pet shop, contact the special person you are secretly in love with or ……. (you fill out your dreamed desire).
And every time you think of it at least 2 things happen:
- You get this great vision how super cool it would be. You would be happy and fulfilled, enthusiast and inspired, in love with life and at peace with yourself.
- It scares the shit out of you.
It is so scary that the first thing you do is NOT take action to make this dream come true.
You move away by doing stuff right in the middle of your cozy comfort zone. You check your social media, watch TV or do some chores which are ‘super important’ and should be done now.
Pushing away your dream…
Delaying your actions…
Until… worst case…
At the end of your life…
Knowing… yes, you will know… you never lived YOUR DREAM.
That hurts much more than hitting the table. A life not lived to the fullest. For me that is worst pain imaginable, my biggest fear, ironically enough.
If you feel this fear, the fear that pops up when you make contact with your desires, be happy.
The bigger the fear, the more you can be certain your dream is your true dream.
The more value it has to you, the bigger the fear.
Behind this incredible fear is your biggest expression, and your biggest reward.
So if you recognize this, be happy.
